product-care
PAWD products are built to last a lifetime — but only if they're cared for properly. Here's everything you need to know to keep your leather goods, hardware, ropes, and ceramics in peak condition for years to come.
## Leather Care
Full-grain leather is unlike any other material. It doesn't just age — it improves. The oils from your dog's coat and your hands gradually work into the leather, developing a rich patina that's unique to your pet.
**Cleaning:**
Wipe down leather with a slightly damp cloth after muddy walks. Never submerge leather in water or machine wash it. For dried mud or grime, let it dry completely first, then brush off with a soft-bristle brush.
**Conditioning:**
Apply a small amount of leather conditioner (beeswax-based is ideal) every 3–6 months, or whenever the leather begins to look dry or stiff. Work it in with a soft cloth in circular motions. Buff off any excess.
**What to avoid:**
- Direct sunlight for extended periods (causes fading and drying)
- Leaving wet leather folded or bunched (causes cracking)
- Harsh chemical cleaners, saddle soap with high detergent content, or baby wipes
**Water exposure:**
PAWD leather is naturally water-resistant but not waterproof. If the collar gets soaked, pat dry with a clean cloth and allow to dry flat at room temperature. Never use a hairdryer or direct heat.
## Hardware Care
Our brass and stainless steel hardware requires minimal care. Wipe clean with a dry or lightly damp cloth. Brass hardware will naturally develop a warm patina over time — this is normal and desirable. If you prefer to maintain the shine, use a small amount of brass polish on the hardware only, keeping it away from the leather.
## Rope & Woven Product Care
Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly and hang to air dry. Do not machine wash or tumble dry — this can distort the weave and affect structural integrity.
## Ceramic Bowl Care
Our ceramic bowls are dishwasher safe (top rack). The food-safe glaze is lead-free and designed for daily use. Avoid sudden temperature changes — don't pour boiling water into a cold bowl. Chips or cracks in ceramic bowls should be addressed immediately as bacteria can accumulate.
## Storage
When not in use, store leather products flat or hanging in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid storing in plastic bags — leather needs to breathe.
## When to Replace
Even the best products wear out. Check stitching, buckle tongues, and D-rings periodically for signs of wear. If stitching is fraying or hardware shows significant corrosion, it's time to replace. PAWD's 12-month warranty covers manufacturing defects — email hello@pawd.com.au with photos if you believe your product has failed prematurely.
